The BSE and NSE have released the 2025 holiday schedule, detailing 14 non-trading days for the year.
As the new year begins, investors are curious to know if Indian stock markets will operate on January 1, 2025. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) have confirmed that trading will proceed as usual on this day. This includes activity in the equity, currency derivatives, commodity derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGR) segments.
Will Stock Market Open On 1st January?
Despite the festive cheer from New Year’s Eve celebrations, the stock markets will remain open for trading on Wednesday, January 1, 2025. Investors can carry on their trading activities without interruption as the day is not listed as a market holiday.
January 2025: Limited Stock Market Holidays
January does not offer many breaks for market participants. The only stock market holiday in the month, Republic Day, falls on Sunday, January 26, a non-trading day regardless. As such, markets will operate as usual throughout the rest of the month.

The BSE and NSE have released the 2025 holiday schedule, detailing 14 non-trading days for the year. These holidays are spread across various months:
- February: Maha Shivaratri (February 26)
- March: Holi (March 14), Id-Ul-Fitr (March 31)
- April: Shri Mahavir Jayanti (April 10), Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14), Good Friday (April 18)
- May: Maharashtra Day (May 1)
- August: Independence Day (August 15), Ganesh Chaturthi (August 27)
- October: Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra (October 2), Diwali Laxmi Pujan (October 21), Diwali Balipratipada (October 22)
- November: Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti (November 5)
- December: Christmas (December 25)
Some holidays fall on weekends, such as Republic Day (January 26), Shri Ram Navami (April 6), and Muharram (July 6), all of which occur on Sundays. Bakri Id (June 7) falls on a Saturday.
