World Liver Day 2025
The liver frequently takes on the role of the unsung hero in our hectic lives, which are full of processed foods, pollution, and stress. It works nonstop in the background to remove toxins and maintain your body’s optimal operation. However, even this strong organ has its limitations.
The liver emits distress signals when it is overloaded, many of which are simple to ignore. Your body may be telling you it’s time to reset if you’re experiencing symptoms like dull skin, frequent headaches, unexplained fatigue, or digestive problems. Giving your body the support it needs to recover and flourish is the goal of a liver detox, not drastic cleanses or starvation diets. Dr. Deep Kamal Soni, Gastroenterologist, Indian Spinal Injury Centre, Vasant Kunj shares all you need to know:
How can you spot the hidden symptoms of the liver?
• If you are always tired, even after a good sleep.
• If you feel bloated, particularly after eating.
• If you experience long-term brain fog that leads to distraction or forgetfulness.
• If your skin is abnormally pale.
• If alcohol tastes more potent than usual.
• If you experience inexplicable headaches or overall severe headaches.
What burns your liver?
Genetics do come into play, but the majority of stress on the liver is a result of an individual’s day-to-day living. Specifically, where life is in flux, particularly in cities. Fried or processed food is constantly consumed without pause. Even a small amount of alcohol, when consumed regularly, eventually places stress on the liver. There is also indiscriminate use of over-the-counter painkillers without consultation, which hampers liver function.
In addition, if one smokes or inhales cigarette smoke nearby, it can be very harmful, as everything enters the system. When prolonged stress and intermittent sleep are added to the mix, it creates a vicious cycle.
How Can You Assist the Liver and Combat Overload?
The liver is one of the few organs that can heal itself. No extreme detox diet is required; just awareness and consistent routines can make a significant difference.
• Hydrate yourself with warm water or herbal tea, like Tulsi and dandelion, when you wake up.
• Consume clean and healthy foods like leafy green vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower), citrus fruits, garlic, and beetroot.
• Cut down on alcohol, sugar, refined carbs, and unnecessary medications.
• Low-impact exercises like a 30-minute walk, stretching, or yoga can aid blood circulation and detoxification.
• Rest and reboot with 7–8 hours of good sleep.
• Journaling, music, deep breathing, or even 10 minutes of silence can help reduce cortisol levels and give your liver space to function better.
Once the lifestyle change has been put into motion, if one still experiences fatigue, skin issues, or gastrointestinal discomfort, a liver function test (LFT) should be a top priority. Early detection of liver strain can help prevent long-term conditions like fatty liver or chronic inflammation. The liver is a silent worker, and even in overburdened systems, caution must be exercised before damage occurs.
