Actress Jayati Bhatia, popular for her role as Mataji in Sasural Simar Ka, has recently opened up about her career in the film industry. Bhatia made her debut in Hindi television during the 90s and has been working in the industry since then. During her initial years, the actress was seen in various popular TV shows, including Challenge, Tu Tu Main Main, Kaise Kahoon, Kitne Cool Hai Hum, among other shows. Throughout her career, Bhatia has played multiple roles in different shows; however, her performance in Sasural Simar Ka helped her to mark a permanent presence in the industry. She played the role of Nirmala Bharadwaj AKA Mataji, the matriarch of the family. Sasural Simar Ka quickly became a fan favourite soap opera and made its way onto the list of longest-running Indian television series.
In a recent interview with Times Entertainment, Bhatia reflected on her role in Sasural Simar Ka as she said, “It’s my role as Mataji in Sasural Simar Ka, which was a game-changer for me. Even today, people call me Mataji.” Bhatia did an extraordinary performance in the show for 7 years before returning in a new character to the second season of the show. In this season, Bhatia played the role of Geetanjali Gopichand Oswal. The show ran for 2 years and ended in April 2023.
Although she has been in the industry for decades, Bhatia still feels the excitement and nervousness of a newcomer when she walks into a set. “I still get nervous because there’s a certain expectation from me as a performer. Even though I have been working in the industry since 1997, I’m excited about every role that I take up,” Bhatia told Times Entertainment.
Along with TV serials, Bhatia has been cast in multiple films and OTT shows. She was recently seen playing the role of Phatto on Heeramandi, which got wide acclaim from critics and audiences. “Sometimes people even call me Phatto, my character from Heeramandi,” Bhatia said during the interview, explaining all these roles are close to her heart, but in the present she’s looking forward to exploring new roles.
