Mines Rovers grab second win to open GFLW season
Chanelle Halligan celebrated her return to Mines Rovers’ line-up with three goals that led a 19-point win, 6.9 (45) to 4.2 (26), against Kalgoorlie last Saturday in the Goldfields Football League’s women’s division.
Halligan, who is coming off a 46-goal campaign last year when the Diorite claimed a maiden GFLW flag, missed the season-opener as a member of Subiaco’s Rogers Cup squad in the WAFLW.
Her output up forward, along with a goal each to Gypsie Knipler, Melaila Hansen, and Abigail Kennedy, paved the way for the blue-and-whites’ five-goal second half after they trailed at the main break.
It included 2.5 in the last term as Mines Rovers wrapped-up a second victory to remain unbeaten under new coach Russell Rodan.
Wiebke Piringer was Kalgoorlie’s leading forward with two goals, complemented by one apiece to Tarmeka Smyth and Tahlor-Jayne Hankey.
After 16 games in 2023 yielded 19 goals, Halligan last year stamped herself a reliable option in attack by hitting the scoreboard in all but two games — underpinned by a haul of 16 goals against Kambalda in round 17.
Mines Rovers play Kambalda when fixtures resume on April 26.
