Many people swear by a brisk walk for good health, but going for a slow walk early in the morning may be more beneficial, said author and content creator Ashdin Doctor in a podcast with Raj Shamani. “A slow walk in a fasted state lowers your blood sugar levels and starts using up your muscle glycogen. It starts the process of your body using up the sugar stored inside your muscles in your blood, which helps with weight loss (sic),” said Doctor.

He added that it also sensitises the body to glucose response while getting some vitamin D. “That one habit has so many little benefits stacked into it. So, it’s one of the power-packed ones,” continued Doctor.

Taking a cue from his advice, we asked an expert if it’s effective for health.

Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant, orthopedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, said that a slow walk on an empty stomach is one of the most significant ways to start the day. “Most people are not up for intense workouts or physical activities and prefer light exercises. In this case, a slow morning walk can be ideal but also provides a range of benefits, including improved blood circulation, and boosts your energy levels without putting too much pressure on your joints,” said Dr Khatri.

One doesn’t need any unique setup for the walk.

“You just need to step out and go to your society compound, terrace, drawing room, or a nearby park. Morning walks in the parks can help you stay refreshed and energetic throughout the day. Exposure to sunlight increases during morning walk, which can help your body produce enough vitamin D. It is vital for bone health and immunity,” said Dr Khatri.

Dr Khatri said that apart from regulating blood sugar levels, it helps enhance overall mood by reducing stress. Slow walks are a beneficial habit that is easy and can be adopted by people from all age groups.
